Sir George Bain to deliver inaugural 50th anniversary lecture
13 Jan 2015
To mark the start of MBS’ 50th anniversary in 2015, Sir George Bain will be delivering the first of an annual series of lectures commemorating the work of MBS’ founding director, Professor Grigor McClelland
This new series of lectures will explore the interaction between business, education and social responsibility – an area that Grigor pioneered throughout his career.
George will speak about The Future of the National Minimum Wage, alongside discussant Professor Jill Rubery who brings her extensive experience in the field of low pay and minimum wage policy to bear on the topic. There will, of course, be plenty of opportunity for an audience Q&A session.
The lecture will take place at 5pm on Thursday, 29 January, 2015 at MBS (venue tbc).
Sir George Bain has worked extensively with the Low Pay Commission and, more recently, the Resolution Foundation.
Manchester played a role in his illustrious academic career when at the age of 30 he was appointed to one of MBS’ legacy institutions, as the first Frank Thomas Professor of Industrial Relations in the Department of Management Sciences, UMIST in 1969.
The establishment of this professorship and George’s appointment to it set the foundations for MBS’ current leading research reputation in this area.
From here he joined the newly established Warwick Industrial Relations Research Unit, and subsequently headed up both Warwick Business School and London Business School before finally becoming Vice Chancellor of Queens’ University Belfast from 1998 until 2004.
Join us for what is set to be a stimulating evening.
