Memorial service for Professor Jack Lewis, Department of Chemistry (1961-67)

A Memorial Service will be held at Robinson College, University of Cambridge, at 2 pm on Saturday, 28 February 2015 for Professor Jack Lewis - Lord Lewis of Newnham, FRS
Jack Lewis, who died on 17 July 2014, aged 86, was Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Manchester (with a particular interest in organometallic chemistry) from 1961 to 1967. He was also an alumnus of Manchester in his own right - having been awarded an MSc in 1962 during his tenure here.
Jack Lewis moved to UCL in 1967. After three years at UCL, he transferred to Cambridge, where he remained until 2001, and became inaugural Warden of Robinson College in 1977.
He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1973, knighted in 1982 and was president of the Royal Society of Chemistry from 1986 to 1988.
He was created Baron Lewis of Newnham, so entering the House of Lords, in 1989, where he sat on several select committees and served as chair of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He was also a member of the Advisory Council for the Campaign for Science and Engineering.
Manchester awarded him an honorary DSc in 1990 and UMIST made him an honorary fellow in the same year.
Since 2008 the Royal Society of Chemistry has awarded an annual prize in his name.

Tickets must be applied for in advance and priority will be given to Lewis family members, senior staff at Cambridge, people who worked for Professor Lewis, and so on, for seating in the Chapel, but there will be extra seating in the Auditorium, to which the service will be relayed. Other college members and guests will be accommodated in the Chapel if space permits but, in any case, these seats will be allocated on a first-to-book basis.
