Opening doors to heart research

09 Dec 2014

A British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Fellow from the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences helped the charity launch a new shop recently in Stockport

BHF shop opening

Dr Charles Pearman from the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences was invited to cut the ribbon at the opening of the new British Heart Foundation shop as part of the University’s ongoing collaboration with the charity.

The British Heart Foundation is a major funder of the research carried out by Dr Pearman and his colleagues in the Institute.

Commenting his involvement in the launch of the shop, Dr Pearman said: “Research funded by the BHF has saved thousands of lives and greatly improved the quality of life for people with heart problems. BHF shops across the UK play a vital role in fundraising for the charity. Being asked to help open this new shop was a great opportunity for me to say thank you for the BHF’s continued support of our life-saving research into heart disease.

“When you consider that selling two sofas could fund a local scientist like me for a whole day, it really puts into perspective how much this store can help us keep fighting for every heartbeat.”

The British Heart Foundation is the largest independent funder of heart research in the UK and, within a generation, they aim to reduce cardiovascular disease in the UK to one of the lowest levels in Europe. More needs to be found out about the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of heart disease. Research is expensive and the charity relies almost entirely upon voluntary donations for its income.

The new shop in Warren Street, Stockport will sell furniture and electrical goods.
