Manchester Medical School staff run luncheon club for the elderly

As part of its ongoing Social Responsibility work, six members of Manchester Medical School staff, academic and administrative, recently visited Ladybarn Community Centre in Fallowfield to run a luncheon club for the elderly

With the support of Professor Tony Freemont, Head of School, Manchester Medical School (MMS) signed up to this particular project, which is part of the ‘Business in the Community Initiative’ (BITC) for reasons outlined by Siobhan Cartwright, School Lead for Social Responsibility:

"Quite often projects involving the elderly are overlooked and we were keen therefore to find one that looked at this specific group.

“The luncheon club meets twice a week and BITC organises teams such as ours, to go in and help them with serving the lunches and organising activities such as bingo and raffle. We also decided to lead a sing song which everyone really enjoyed and which offered something different to the usual activities.”

The MMS team comprised Siobhan Cartwright, Denise Wareing, Jill Livingstone, Andy Conway, Isabella Fairclough and student intern, Sara Catalano. The organisers at Ladybarn complimented the team on the success of this initial visit and as part of its social responsibility commitment, the School has agreed to visit Ladybarn bi-annually.
