Interdisciplinary event prompts collaborative research opportunities

27 Nov 2014

Showcase event on collaborative links addressing healthcare needs attended by around 100 cross-Faculty delegates

An interdisciplinary symposium was held earlier this month at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB), attended by around 100 delegates from MIB, the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences (FMHS, related organisations and industry sponsors.

The showcase event, aimed at building fruitful research collaborations and increasing joint grant applications, was entitled ‘Collaborative links addressing healthcare needs’. It included a series of highlight presentations from FMHS, and MIB researchers, in thematic sessions covering disease areas including cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, and technical approaches such as ‘omics and systems approaches.

Professor David Ray, FMHS Associate Dean for Research, said: “The symposium provided a fantastic opportunity to identify areas for collaboration which combine elements of strength and expertise in a way that could have a massive impact on the number and quality of collaborative research projects.

"I’m sure that this gathering today represents the tip of the iceberg and that there is a great deal of potential for further engagement with the many people across the University who can contribute to high quality interdisciplinary grant applications and research projects."

Professor Douglas Kell, Research Chair in Bioanalytical Science, FEPS School of Chemistry and MIB, concluded the day by chairing an open discussion and wrap up session to draw together the outcomes from each of the day’s sessions, identifying next actions and opportunities for building grant applications. Professor Kell said: “There is great potential for building on some very exciting opportunities for high quality collaborative research linking across the Faculties and MIB.”
