Honouring those killed as a result of hatred of gender non-conforming people

Thursday, 20 November is Trans Day of Remembrance – this is celebrated every year to honour those who have been killed as a result of transphobia, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people; it acts to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community.

Around 1% of our university population – around 500 people – identify as Trans, an umbrella term which includes but is not restricted to transgender and transsexual people whose gender identity differs from their biological sex, so it is important to recognise this day.

As in 2013 the University will be marking the day with the flying of the Trans flag on campus along with information leaflets available for people. 

In addition, there will be a lunchtime guest speaker. ‘Intersex and Trans at the University of Manchester – my experience’ will be an informative talk given by Jay Hayes-Light. Jay is the Director of the UK Intersex Association (UKIA), a charity founded in 2000 and has a background in child mental health – completing his PhD here at Manchester, where he was offered a post graduate research place within the Hester Adrian Research Centre.

Jay was born with an intersex condition and until 1984 lived most of his life in a gender role mapped out by medical intervention and social engineering.

Jay will share his experiences and be available for questions on both intersex and Trans issues – especially around practical issues and real-life experiences at the University.

Spaces are limited as this is bound to be an insightful and informative session, therefore pre-booking is required.
