Workshop to shed light on influencing Select Committees

A key member of staff from the House of Commons Transport Select Committee will be providing insight into how academics can effectively engage with parliament and share policy ideas
Alexandra Meakin, Committee Specialist from Commons Transport Committee, will speak at a ‘Working with Select Committees’ session on the morning of Monday, 17 November (10-1.30am). The session will be held at University Place Room 2.219.
The event coincides with an historic visit of the Commons Transport Select Committee to the University for an update evidence session on HS2 – the first time an official Parliamentary session has ever been held at the University.
Ms Meakin will provide information on working with select committees and parliamentary processes from an insider's point of view.
There is a Commons Select Committee for each government department, examining three aspects: spending, policies and administration.
The session will cover how Select Committees operate, the process of – and tips for - submitting evidence, appearing before the committee, and the role of specialist advisers.
These departmental committees have a minimum of 11 members, who decide upon the line of inquiry and then gather written and oral evidence. Findings are reported to the Commons, printed, and published on the Parliament website. The government then usually has 60 days to reply to the committee's recommendations.
The Transport Committee is charged by the House of Commons with scrutiny of the Department for Transport. Its formal remit is to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department of Transport and its associated public bodies.
