Winners – and charity – enjoy sweet success
The University’s first Charity Bake Off saw seven winners enjoy sweet success – and raise £100 for a charity dedicated to reducing food wastage and tackling hunger in the UK.
The Bake Off, at the Union, was run by @Uomfoodies and supported Fareshare Greater Manchester.
Organiser Abigail Saffer said: “After months of planning, it was great to see so many enthusiastic members of staff and students take part.
“Overall, we had about 40 cakes donated and around 60 people attended the event. We raised £100 for Fareshare, and are planning more events in the future.”
Judges included Abigail Saffer (University of Manchester and Uomfoodies), Charlotte Hoosan-Sykes (University of Manchester and food/lifestyle blogger), Kalpna Mistry (part of Nigella Lawson’s team in the Taste), Geth Sherrington who runs the Student Baking Society, Nicola Duncan (head chef at the Beef & Pudding), Iain Devine (the Drunken Butcher) and Fareshare.
Abigail added: “It was a difficult task as there was such a range of cakes, and everyone of course had different tastes and opinions.”
The winners were:
Cat Bell
Victoria Brown
Hester Lonergan
Sarah Plant
Victoria Matthews
Alex Short
Edward Heathman
Prizes were donated by the Drunken Butcher, Kalpna Mistry, Mick Cookson, the 8th Day, Unicorn, Cocoa Cabana and LWC Drinks. We also had gorgeous coffee donated by Coffee Circle, and Terry McNamara had donated his time to take photos of the event.
Uomfoodies is a new social group at the university, primarily for academic and support staff who love food and want to do something a bit different in their spare time. We are planning lots more events, classes and meetings and hope to create a strong community of people who love to eat, bake and cook.
