Professor Sir Mark Walport to deliver a talk aimed at postgraduate science and engineering students

Government Chief Scientific Adviser and Head of the Government Office for Science Professor Sir Mark Walport is to deliver a talk aimed at postgraduate science and engineering students.

Sir Mark directly reports to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, providing scientific advice, advising on aspects of policy on science and technology, ensuring and improving the quality and use of scientific evidence and advice in government and leading the science and engineering profession within the Civil Service.

At the talk, he will discuss his fascinating career, the important role scientists and engineers play in government (including those working in non-technical roles), typical areas and roles in which scientists and engineers work and case studies of issues/areas in which scientists and engineers have made an impact or influenced key decision making.

He will also discuss the big issues for the future that will involve Government scientists and engineers.

The event, on Monday 13 October, is being hosted by the University’s Careers Service.

The Civil Service offer a range of great opportunities for postgraduate scientists and engineers via their Fast Stream strand. They could play an essential part in the Government’s action on issues as diverse as climate change, nuclear non-proliferation, defence technology and food production. These roles need an understanding of science or engineering and confidence in handling technical issues.

Delegates will include students, staff and external stakeholders invited to the event.
