The 2014 Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Lecture
30 Sep 2014
This year's subject is 'Clueless Voting' with Professor Imre Leader, from The University of Cambridge, and will take place on Tuesday, 21st October 2014
The Ollerenshaw Lecture is a prestigious annual lecture in the School of Mathematics, named in honour and recognition of Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw.
Our starting point is the following obviously absurd question:
Suppose that a large group are set to vote on a yes/no issue: each person will vote (in the usual way: in secret, at the same time) and then the `outcome' is taken to be the majority decision. Each voter wants their vote to be right, but no voter has any idea at all about the issue. How should they vote?
The lecture will take place in G107, Alan Turing Building at 5pm. It is suitable for a general audience.
