Why I’m a student ambassador

11 Sep 2014

These students are genuinely excited about working during Welcome, and their reasons will make you smile

Group of student ambassadors

Whether you’re mowing sports fields or finalising induction programmes, staff right across campus are busy working to create an excellent Welcome experience for the thousands of students joining us this September.

You’re also joined by a small army of student ambassadors, all of whom will be enthusiastically welcoming, directing, advising and supporting their peers over the coming days. But what makes them so keen to get involved? We asked some of them, and their answers are brilliant.

“When I first came to Manchester, the first person I talked to was an ambassador. She took me on a tour around the University and told me a lot of information which was very useful and helpful. I want to do the same for next year's first year. I want to give back what I was given and help them find their way and not feel lost or lonely. I also love making new friends and this would be a great opportunity to do that.” Sarah, MPharm Pharmacy

“Being an international student, I found the help from the University immensely useful and supportive in my first few weeks. I had just moved to a new country and the Orientation Team helped me with every single problem that I had, from finding the quickest route to lecture theatres to getting my Unirider pass sorted. I would have never settled in so easily without their support and friendliness.” Sanya, MEng Chemical Engineering

“Being a student ambassador means I get to talk about a University that I'm really proud to be a part of and gave me experience in speaking to others, which I had previously found difficult.” Stephanie, BSocSC Sociology

“I want to be a student ambassador because of the pride it gives me to be part of the University, renowned world over for hosting leading minds.  Coming to UoM can seem daunting to a new student, as it was to me during my first week, and as such I would like to be part of the team that helps students settle in with ease, reassuring them that it won't be long before they too are part of the vibrant city of Manchester. Knowing I could always stop anyone wearing the purple 'Ask me' badges for directions was very reassuring to me.” Felista, Law and Development LLM

“I wish to become a student ambassador as I wish for others to experience the wonderful help and advice I received when I first became a student at the University.” Aasia, BA Economics

“I am proud to be part of The University of Manchester and I would like to make others feel the same way.” Alexandre, BSc International Management
