Oxford Road closure: latest news

09 Sep 2014

United Utilities estimate that the earliest date for completion of the repair works is Saturday, 20 September, but if they find an additional collapse further along the sewer, the project could last a further seven to ten days

hole in Oxford Road

United Utilities have advised the University that the exposed main within the collapsed section of Oxford Road is a water main and they are now excavating down to the sewer beneath it.

Depending on what they find once they reach the sewer, they anticipate two possible outcomes:

A. Road closed until 20 September

  • If the sewer collapse is confined to the existing excavation, United Utilities expect to be able to reinstate the sewer by the end of the current week, then backfill the hole and repair the road surface by Saturday, 20 September.

B. Road closed until 27-30 September

  • If an additional collapse is found further along the sewer, United Utilities will need to investigate this and the repair work could last from seven to ten days longer.

Traffic diversions

Until the repairs are completed, traffic is being diverted along alternative routes, including the following bus services:

  • 15, 16, 18, 38, 41, 42, 43, 44, 53, 111, 142, 143, 157, X41, X57
