University shortlisted in Times Higher Education Awards

School Governors Initiative in running for Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community award

The University has been shortlisted in the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community category in the 10th annual Times Higher Education Awards, for the work done by its School Governor Initiative.

The University of Manchester School Governors Initiative (UMSGI) aims to improve leadership in state schools by encouraging staff and alumni to become school governors, which develops their skills whilst contributing to the development of the school and building stronger relationships.

It is a signature programme within the Social Responsibility strategy at the University as we work to better support the community.

Stephanie Lee, Head of Widening Participation and Outreach, said: "We are delighted to have been shortlisted for a THE Awards for our School Governors Initiative. Through this initiative the University has achieved the largest and fastest growth in school governor volunteers in the UK and we have already surpassed our target to double the number of staff volunteering as governors.

"We have received extremely positive feedback from senior Council Leaders, Head Teachers and Chairs of boards of governors about the initiative and the benefits it has brought to local schools and colleges. We also know from staff who are governors that this role has had a positive impact on their own skills development."

Hundreds of nominations for outstanding institutions, departments and individuals were submitted across 18 categories in the awards, covering the full range of university activity and showcasing the pioneering spirit, adaptability and sheer quality of our sector.

The full shortlist for all 18 categories is published in today’s issue of Times Higher Education, and is also available on the awards website: THE Awards.

The winners will be announced on Thursday 27 November 2014 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London. Once again this promises to be a spectacular event with over 1,000 guests expected to attend, including politicians, senior sector figures, and academic and university staff from all corners of the UK.
