Policy Challenges: Securing the State After Snowden

Hear some different views about how intelligence services should operate today, and what the ‘Snowden Affair’ was really about
The event will take place on Tuesday, 21st October from 11am-12.30pm in Arthur Lewis Boardroom, Arthur Lewis building. Refreshments will be available upon arrival in the room from 10.45am.
It will be chaired by Professor Andrew Russell, Head of Politics, School of Social Sciences. Contributors to the event are:
- Sir David Omand is the author of ‘Securing the State’ (2012). He was director of GCHQ and later the Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office in charge of Security and Intelligence.
- Edward Lucas is author of “The Snowden Operation” (2014), the first serious critique of the Snowden ‘revelations’ and how they have been handled. He is a senior editor on The Economist and has had 30 years-experience in observing the world of intelligence agencies.
There will be a 15 minute discussion at the end of the talks.
This event is open to all staff, students and an external audience.
