Staff volunteers wanted for Orientation and Welcome Programme 2014
21 Jul 2014
Support student ambassadors in delivering the programme and in making this a joyous and exciting time for all our new students
Orientation and Welcome 2014 is getting ever closer and following the huge success of last year’s event we intend to make this year’s programme even more comprehensive and enjoyable. This does though mean that, more than ever, we are reliant on the generous support of our colleagues.
We are currently looking for staff volunteers from any area of the University to support our student ambassadors in delivering the programme and in making this a joyous and exciting time for all our new students. Staff roles vary dependent on the location and the event but essentially you would be supporting a student ambassador team to deliver an activity.
Our student ambassadors have all received training to carry out their tasks but we do offer them the additional guidance of a member of staff. Staff training is also available either face to face or in the form of comprehensive briefing notes. We will be allocating staff members to roles and providing training during August.
We have a range of events and activities that colleagues are able to support such as:
- University Shuttle Service to Residences assistance (this would involve working out at Manchester Airport)
- Front of House/ Assistant Front of House Managers in University Place
- Daytime activity managers
- Chairs for presentations
- Dispatch and support to helpdesks
- Evening Event Supervisors
- Halls and Central Helpdesk Supervisors
- Assistance with training our student ambassadors
We are asking that any colleagues who are interested in getting involved share their availability over the whole Orientation and Welcome period with us (8–19 September) and we also give you the chance to suggest roles that you would prefer to do as well as those you would not like to participate in. We try to be respectful of your preferences wherever possible.
Paul Govey, Head of Student Communications and Marketing, said: “Welcome and orientation is a hugely important time for our students as the impressions made then stay with them for a long time. We have a great reputation for delivering an excellent experience, not only through the enthusiasm of our student ambassadors, but also our staff. If you can get involved it will be both rewarding for you and valuable for our new students”.
Any colleague who is interested should obtain the permission of their line manager either to participate during normal working hours or, in the case of weekend or evening work, confirmation of the provision of time off in lieu (TOIL) to cover the hours worked.
If you are able to and would like to get involved, please do fill out your availability by 31 July at:
