Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme oversubscribed

16 Jul 2014

The University of Manchester has offered £600,000 postgraduate scholarships for full-time master's students beginning their studies in September 2014

The scholarship scheme was part of a Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) initiative aimed at widening access to postgraduate study and the professions, by removing barriers to postgraduate education for students from underrepresented groups. The scheme was significantly over subscribed, with over 300 applications eligible under the widening participation criteria agreed for the scheme, demonstrating clear demand for funding at this level.

Fifty four scholarships of between £10,000 and £14,400 have been allocated, which have been jointly funded by the University of Manchester and HEFCE as part of a University of Sheffield-led consortium project alongside the Universities of Leeds, Newcastle, Warwick and York.

The scheme is for one year only, but the consortium are committed to finding solutions to support a sustainable and equitable future for postgraduate study, and the outcomes from this project will inform future HEFCE advice to government for PGT funding in 2015/16 and beyond.
