Green Impact 2014 is the biggest yet

09 Jul 2014

The University has celebrated outstanding work by our staff and students to improve environmental sustainability on campus with the Green Impact Awards 2014

Green Impact is an environmental accreditation and awards scheme run by the National Union of Students, which supports teams and departments in making simple, tangible and powerful changes in environmental behaviour and policy through an online workbook of criteria.

This year’s Green Impact involved 68 areas of the University, with a total of 476 members of staff leading Green Impact teams and influencing 2,591 members of staff. 50 students and three members of staff were trained as auditors.

As a result of Green Impact 2014, more than 2,546 astonishingly varied actions were completed across the University, resulting in the following financial and carbon savings:

  • Photocopier double-sided printing    76 TCO2 / £27.36K
  • Lighting and energy                      179 TCO2 / £27.98K
  • Temperature                               22 TCO2 / £2.83K
  • Video conferencing                       43 TCO2 / £3.76K
  • Recycling                                    18 TCO2

Before presenting the awards to the successful Green Impact teams on 6 June 2014, Professor Nancy Rothwell said: “This is the biggest Green Impact yet and it’s fantastic to see so many of you here. Environmental sustainability is now core to the goals of the University and to each of us personally. Paperless working, turning off lights and recycling are becoming engrained in the University culture.

“This event gives us a chance to celebrate the Green Impact teams and the Environmental Sustainability team and to think about what we can do in future. Go back to your workplaces, spread the word about sustainability and make sure you sign up another team next year: perhaps we should set a target of 100 teams for 2014?”

Green Impact Project Plus

From September 2014, a pilot called Green Impact Project Plus will run alongside the next Green Impact programme for those teams which have progressed through all levels of the programme or which are more specialised.

Designed to allow teams to develop a project that will have maximum impact in their areas, Green Impact Project Plus will feature extended timescales, simple entry level criteria, more data collection, more student involvement and support from an academic expert in environmental governance.
