Lenox receives his OBE

Earlier this year, Lenox Green from the School of Mathematics went to Buckingham Palace to receive his OBE for services to the community from the Queen

Lenox and his wife, Heather, run Rainbow, a community centre in Hulme that has provided support for hundreds of local young people and their families over the years and which also now runs a weekly food bank that has become an important part of many homes experiencing food poverty. Lenox has previously been recognised for his work with the University’s Social Responsibility Volunteer of the Year Award in 2012.

Describing the investiture, which took place on 28 March, Lenox said: “It was one of the most memorable and cherished moments of my life. And to share this experience with my wonderful wife, my mother and a granddaughter at Buckingham Palace made the whole event so much more meaningful.”

Colleagues in the School of Mathematics are extremely supportive of his efforts: members of academic staff make generous monthly financial donations, while other colleagues contribute food regularly. These gifts make a real difference in the lives of local people who continue to experience hard times and look to Rainbow for support.

Lenox added: “On behalf of my wife I would like to thank David Ward, Peter Duck, Diane Masterson-Kerr and Nancy Rothwell for all the encouragement and support we have received for the Rainbow Christian Centre’s community outreach projects.

“These last 20 years have been an incredibly fulfilling journey of faith and service which has been an absolute privilege.”
