Competition for youngsters celebrates specimen drawing

The Society of Biology is proud to announce the launch of the Nancy Rothwell Award, a competition aiming to celebrate specimen drawing in schools and highlight the benefits of links between science and art.

The award is named in honour of the first President of the Society of Biology, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester.

Professor Rothwell stepped down from her role at the Society of Biology at their last Annual General Meeting.

A strong advocate of science and art, Professor Rothwell says: "I have always thought in pictures, as I know many scientists do, and many years ago I considered a career in art.

"I think that science and art share more common features than differences, and visual representation is so powerful. I am excited because I’m sure that the drawings submitted will have both scientific accuracy and artistic beauty. This is such an exciting competition to be associated with."

Entries can be submitted in one of three categories (age 7 to 11, 12 to 14 and 15 to 18), and can be inspired by microscope, plant or animal specimens.

Prizes include professional drawing tools, complimentary Society of Biology membership, a guided tour of the Royal Veterinary College and meeting with their artist in residence, Geoffrey Harrison and £250 for the winning schools.

Entries should be submitted via email by the 15 September and winners will be notified by the 3 October.
