Conference: The State of Ireland, 1914

On Friday, 13 June at the Irish World Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill, Manchester (9.30am to 5pm)

The State of Ireland, 1914 is a one-day conference that taps into the great public interest in the centenary of the First World War. The conference is a part of the University's wider efforts to mark the centenary of the First World War over the next few years.

The Irish and Northern Irish states are currently undergoing a centenary decade of commemoration, lasting from 2012 until 2022. During these years a great deal of public attention will be directed towards commemorating landmark events including the First World War and the formation of the modern Irish and Northern Irish states.

The conference will use the eve of the First World War to present a historical snapshot of Ireland in the early twentieth century. Papers will cover the social and economic climate of the island in 1914, nationalism and the issue of Home Rule and draws attention to the complex relationship between Ireland and Great Britain at this important turning point. The conference will include contribution from distinguished researchers in Manchester, Dublin and Cork, including a keynote lecture by historian, Professor Patrick Joyce.

It has been generously supported by the Economic History Society, Arts Methods at University of Manchester and the Irish World Heritage Centre.
