Manchester student crowned Undergraduate of the Year

Award includes coveted summer internship with global energy giant

A Manchester student has won a coveted paid summer internship with global company, EDF Energy, in a national and high profile competition.

Chemical Engineering student Celine Dischamps was crowned the ‘Low Carbon Undergraduate of the Year’. In addition to the internship, her prize includes a visit to a nuclear power station in France and an exclusive lunch with an EDF Station Director.

Including Celine, Manchester had five finalists in the 12 award categories – deemed by organisers, graduate recruitment media company TARGETjobs, an excellent result.

Celine and nine other undergraduates, along with Tammy Goldfeld, deputy director of the Careers Service, were invited to the final in Canary Wharf where the winner was announced.

The students had faced a series of online tests, application forms, interviews and assessment exercises and Celine emerged as the winner from a very strong field. Sponsors targeted a number of universities so she beat off competition from students from other excellent universities.

Her award was one of twelve presented on the day, each sponsored by a top graduate recruiter: Mars, Laing O’Rourke, E.ON, EDF Energy, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Marks & Spencer, Gazprom, Nestle, Rolls-Royce, EU Careers, CGI and Mayer Brown.

TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year is the company’s flagship annual competition, focusing on the personalities, skills and abilities of students from a range of degree subjects. It provides the opportunity for the very best to emerge and win prizes, ranging from overseas trips to specially commissioned internships.

Tammy Goldfeld said: “It was incredibly rewarding to see so many Manchester finalists at the event and Celine receiving her award. We hope her experience will inspire other students to enter competitions such as these and pursue summer internships.”
