Buying with a conscience - Garments made in Bangladesh?

01 May 2014

Panel discussion on Monday, 19 May (5.15pm to 7.15pm) in Kanaris Lecture Theatre, Manchester Museum followed by drinks

Buying with a conscience

Bangladesh is the world’s second largest garment exporter supplying most major brands. Yet it has a reputation for poor working conditions and factory disasters, including the collapse of Rana Plaza in 2013 killing over 1,000 workers. These tragedies prompted the formation of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety, an unprecedented coalition between 150+ brands and key trade unions.

Some question whether we should buy clothes from Bangladesh. Others are working proactively to ensure conditions for workers improve.

This panel discussion brings together leading researchers and actors to debate whether we can buy Bangladesh garments with a conscience – and what can be done to improve conditions for workers in the industry.
