Bakers rise to the occasion for Macmillan Cancer Support

Administrators from the School of Medicine Graduate Office held a cake sale earlier this month in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and raised £54.60.

The eight colleagues wanted to raise funds as some of them have family members currently being supported by Macmillan nurses, who provide practical and emotional support to cancer sufferers. 

Postgraduate administrator Christie Finegan said: “The Macmillan nurses are brilliant, and I wanted to personally do something as they have been extremely supportive to one of my family members. And it’s not just emotional support, they can offer advice on issues such as accommodation needs.

“We initially planned to hold this as a one-off sale but with response being so good from colleagues not just in the Stopford Building, but from other parts of the campus, my colleague Jemma Fielding has proposed that we ought to try this on a quarterly basis.”

On sale were six homemade cakes; carrot cake, carrot and courgette, red velvet, chocolate fudge, lemon and poppy seed and lemon drizzle, plus a selection of other goodies. Sweet-toothed colleagues bought every cake, swelling the coffers by giving far more than the suggested donation.
