Ian Jackson running for brain tumour research
07 Apr 2014
Now in its 12th year, the 10K Bupa Great Manchester Run takes place on 18 May. Among the thousands of runners expected to take part will be Ian Jackson, Measurement Surveyor in the Directorate of Estates and Facilities, who will be running in support of the Brain Tumour Research charity.
Ian’s Father-in-Law, David Boswell, passed way in June 2011 from a brain tumour so when Ian decided to attempt the Bupa run for the first time, a charity looking into the causes and possible cures of the condition was the most logical choice to raise funds for.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of UK children and adults and yet receive less than 1% of the national spend on cancer research. Brain Tumour Research are the only national charity in the UK funding sustainable and continuous research into brain tumours.
App Inspiration
Ian was inspired to up his running regime after downloading an App to his iphone. He said:
- “Previously my running was sporadic, doing a couple of miles here or there, however since downloading this App my running has gone from strength to strength. Much to my partners dismay I’ve been getting up at ridiculous times in the morning to run six miles whilst pumping heavy rock into my ears. Due to my newly inspired running I thought I would enter this year’s Manchester 10k. I decided to run for brain tumour research, chosen because my father in law died of this horrible disease. This of course has put pressure on me to raise money and also given me an expectant audience! To further increase the pressure, my mate has challenged me to run it under 48 minutes. This is my first 10k race so wish me luck!”
