Cycle Theft Victim Bike Loan Scheme Launch
30 Jan 2014
Helping victims of bike crime at the University
On 12th February we will be launching a pilot scheme that will offer any student or staff member at the University who has had a cycle stolen the short-term loan of a recycled bike for free.
This will ensure that the cyclist has a means of transport while they are waiting to replace their stolen bike.
Ian Halliwell, Crime Reduction Advisor in the University's Security Services said, "Theft of bikes is by far the largest crime category we suffer on campus. To help reduce the number of bikes stolen we've introduced free bike registration, a free lock for students/staff who suffer bike crime and a discounted 'D' lock scheme. To go that one step further, we're responding to what bike theft victims have told us about the inconvenience and cost of finding alternative transport by providing a cycle on loan whilst they look to purchase another bike."
A number of bikes have been recovered both on campus and by the police and all have been serviced as part of either a community payback scheme or volunteers at Biko Bikes.
This initiative is a joint venture between the University's Students Union (Biko Bikes), Greater Manchester Police and various departments within the University including Car Parks, Sustainability and Security.
