Skill sharing masterclasses for academic staff

07 Jan 2014

A new portfolio of lunchtime masterclasses for academics - led by leading academics and administrators - has been added to the staff training calendar as part of a new approach to academic staff training at the University.

CPD masterclass

Training and learning can be a catalyst for new ways of thinking and for ensuring you have the right combination of skills. It can help you work in new ways, save you time and support you in working effectively with colleagues and the University’s support services.

The new masterclass sessions will cover a wide range of topics including: managing research centres, supporting the career development of researchers, teaching large lectures, being a programme director and finance skills for principal investigators.

Each masterclass includes lunch and the opportunity to share experiences with fellow academic colleagues from across the University. The sessions are open to experienced academics.

Dr Kingsley Purdam, Academic Director for Academic Staff Training and Development at the University said: “The University is investing in a new approach to academic staff training with a focus on Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This involves identifying and planning training needs, skill sharing and recording and reflecting on learning and development. The ongoing undertaking of professional training is increasingly seen as an important part of academic staff career development and is identified in personal development reviews. The content and design of these new masterclasses has been informed by evidence from the staff survey and also the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning in higher education”.

Academic staff are encouraged to keep an Academic Training Record to document the training they have undertaken and to reflect on how useful it has been. Staff can also use the ‘My Profile Training’ tool record hosted on the STDU website.

Places on each masterclass are limited. You can reserve your place at the STDU Training Catalogue. Just type in ‘CPD’ into the search.
