Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has now analysed all responses received to the public consultation which took place during May-July 2013.
More than 1,000 people commented on the plans for both Oxford Road and Manchester city centre.
The report demonstrates support for the original proposals for Oxford Road, with opinion divided as follows:
- 65% of consultees in support
- 12% against the plans
- 23% neutral or with no clear opinion
The proposals under consultation for Oxford Road were:
- Oxford Road to be limited to buses, cycles, hackney carriages (taxis) and emergency vehicles only between Hathersage Road and Grosvenor Street.
- Oxford Road to be limited to one-way general traffic from Grosvenor Street to Whitworth Street in a north-bound direction. Buses, cycles, hackney carriages (taxis) and emergency vehicles will still be able to travel in both directions.
- General traffic will be able to travel towards central Manchester along Upper Brook Street and Princess Street as far as Whitworth Street.
- General traffic travelling between east and west will still be able to cross Oxford Road at key locations, such as Booth Street.
- Improved cycle routes, including links to the existing cycle network and improving links between the east and west of Oxford Road as well as to and from Manchester city centre.
- Improvements for cyclists, including separate lanes on Oxford Road.
- Improved pedestrian facilities at junctions and pedestrian crossings along Oxford Road.
- Oxford Road is proposed to be 20 mph between Hathersage Road and Portland Street.
- The introduction of additional 24 hour waiting and loading restrictions to support existing restrictions and maintain journey times and reliability of bus services along Oxford Road.
- The introduction of Bus Stop Clearways at each stop along the route.
