The Whitworth may now be closed to complete its £15 million transformation but the collection is still working hard!
Whitworth Art Gallery has collaborated with renowned London gallerist, Andrew Clayton-Payne, to display 16 stunning watercolours from the Whitworth’s collection by the greatest British landscape painter, J M W Turner, at his gallery on Old Bond Street, London.
The Whitworth’s collection of collection of British watercolours is internationally famous and there are 60 examples by Turner. For this show David Morris, Head of Collections at the Whitworth, selected 16 choice Turners in prime condition to give an overview of the artist’s range of work in watercolour.
The Whitworth will re-open in autumn 2014 as a 21st century gallery in the park.
Maria Balshaw, Director of the Whitworth, said: “The new development will enable the Whitworth to meet the needs of current and future audiences, double the exhibition and public space, display more of its collections and welcome even more visitors.
“This collaborative display with Andrew Clayton-Payne gives the Whitworth the unprecedented opportunity, before the new Whitworth re-opens, to display some of the finest examples from its collection of watercolours in London.”
