Network upgrade to bring faster connectivity to your desktop
26 Nov 2013
Core IT networks to be upgraded during December 2013 and February 2014.
In response to feedback from the research community, IT Services are carrying out work to increase the speed of the core network at the University; which supports connectivity across campus, linking buildings, data centres, halls of residence, providing connectivity to other universities and of course the internet.
The improved network will allow faster speeds to your computer desktop, as well as bring significant benefit to the Computational Shared Facility (CSF) and Research Data Service (RDS).
Initial works to achieve this will involve upgrading the core network routers which support various University systems and services. This will involve some periods of (minimal) downtime, with works mostly taking place in the mornings, between 7.15am and 10.15am.
Business areas have been consulted to ensure any major disruptions are avoided and works have been now scheduled to take place on the following dates:
- Reynolds House: 5 December 2013
- Kilburn Building: 17 December 2013
- Renold Building: 4 February 2014
- Stopford Building: 11 February 2014
- Whitworth Hall: 18 February 2014
Full information of which systems and services will be affected during the works in December is available on the Core network upgrade project webpage.
Reminder notices will be posted on StaffNet prior to each set of works being carried out.
