We reduce waste sent to landfill whilst raising money for charity
We work in Estates and Facilities. When a colleagues’ nephew passed away unexpectedly on holiday, we were keen to find a way to raise money for Reuben’s Retreat, a charity set up in his name. As a Green Impact Team member at the time, I looked into something sustainable, and came across Terracycle, a company who reuse rubbish to save it from landfill, donating to charity for each item received.
Stephanie has been a real driving force in taking things forwards, setting up collection points throughout the building, packaging the items, and promoting the scheme to other University Green Impact Teams. We now collect items such as toothbrushes, yoghurt pots, pens and biscuit wrappers.
In less than a year we have collected around 1,400 items, which otherwise would have been sent to landfill. We’re doing our bit for the environment as well as raising money for a very good cause and with other departments and buildings joining in too; we can make even more of a difference!
