I coach students into Higher Education

Making a difference

I am a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Life Sciences and I have been a Manchester Access Programme (MAP) Academic Tutor for the last six years. Over this time I have tutored over 25 MAP students. This programme supports talented students who are from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in universities.

The aim of the programme is to support entry to The University of Manchester, or another research-intensive university, through the completion of a portfolio of work demonstrating specific knowledge and skills. One element of the programme is to produce an independent piece of research. This gives a real insight into what they can expect during the first year of undergraduate study. It’s great to see the difference my support can make to young peoples’ lives and how they have embraced my support.

Many of my previous MAP tutees have progressed to be undergraduate students here at Manchester and I have been able to witness firsthand the way in which MAP has helped in their preparation for university.
