I support local charities by encouraging student volunteers
My day job is leading the University’s volunteering and community engagement team. Our main focus is supporting literally hundreds of local charities and not-for-profits by getting students to volunteer for their causes. Every year the students we work with give around 50,000 volunteer hours to local causes.
In my spare time I do my own volunteering running a Guide unit every week for 30 girls in my town. This involves running weekly activities, helping them plan their own activities and lots of trips away – including pop concerts, camping trips and next month a trip to London, as most of them have never been! I’ve had the opportunity to travel overseas as part of this role to help set up Guiding overseas as well as helping to organise the biggest youth event ever a couple of years ago when we brought together 40,000 Scouts and Guides from virtually every country in the world to one massive camp in the UK.
