Countdown to April 2014 – is your computer ready?

In April 2014, Microsoft will stop issuing security updates for Windows XP.
From this date on, if your computer is running Windows XP, your data and that of other PCs connected to the network will be at risk.
Since February, IT Services have been working to upgrade University of Manchester computers to the Windows 7 Managed Desktop and your feedback has been very positive.
Of approximately 150 responses to feedback requests from colleagues in PSS, the average score for communications regarding the update was 4.69 out of 5, and regarding the process and helpfulness of IT Services staff, the score was 4.88 out of 5.
To the question “Has your login time now improved?” where 1=Worse, 2=Same and 3=Better, the average score was 2.97.

- “I’ve gained hours of work time a week!”
- “I can’t believe how much difference the new PC has made to my work, it’s so much quicker to do everything. Thank you very much!”
- “Excellent- I wish I had this a year ago!”
The work to upgrade Windows XP computers to the Windows 7 Managed Desktop will continue over the next few months, and IT Services will put further measures in place to protect the network and your data once Microsoft stops releasing updates for Windows XP.
