It’s Time to Talk!
11 Nov 2013
Register now for our mental health event ‘It’s Time to Talk’ on 3 December (4.30-6.30pm).
Like our bodies, our minds can become unwell, so starting a conversation about mental health is important. It helps people to recover, and it can strengthen a relationship between friends, family and colleagues.
It is exciting to be holding an event that will bring both staff and students together, to tackle an issue that many wish to avoid. Whilst one in four people experience mental health problems at any one time, 9 out of 10 experience discrimination as a result.
The aim of this event is to raise awareness of mental health issues which is key in order to tackle stigma and discrimination.
How does this apply to me?
University life comes with its challenges, making both students and staff at high risk for mental ill health. You might think that you do not know anyone with a mental health problem, but you probably work with someone who does. It may be surprising to know that 25% of people consider resigning work due to stress.
What will happen at the event
Interactive activities will take place throughout the session, giving you the opportunity to evaluate your own ideas about mental health and hopefully learn something new.
Members of our University (staff and students) will also share their own experiences of mental health problems.
Time to Change
Time to Change is England's biggest programme to challenge mental health stigma and discrimination. The University signed the Time to Change pledge in June 2013, signalling our commitment to help raise awareness and to tackle the stigma around mental health for our staff and students. This event is one of our actions as part of our Action Plan written for the Pledge.
