Could your lab make a Green Impact?

07 Nov 2013

The Environmental Sustainability team are challenging staff and students to Think Sustainability: Green Impact is part of this call to action.

Think Sustainabilty

Launched in 2008 nationally and piloted by The University of Manchester, Green Impact is designed to increase awareness of sustainability and supports teams to achieve bottom-up, positive changes in their own context.

Laboratory operation has many significant environmental impacts ranging from energy and resource consumption to chemical and equipment use and disposal. Experience shows that many of these impacts can be reduced or avoided in cost-effective ways without compromising research, safety or teaching.

There is a separate section within the Green Impact workbook which has been designed specifically for laboratories. The actions focus on issues such as efficient cold storage, fume cupboards, ventilation and heating, chemicals, waste and water.

Last year the University had twelve lab teams, seven of which achieved the Gold Award. We are looking to increase the number of labs taking part and are encouraging staff from across the University to sign up by Monday, 16 December. It doesn’t matter what job you do or which building you work in, you can form a team.

Once you have completed your workbook, you will be audited and then presented with an award at our celebration ceremony in the summer. Sign-up now to contribute to developing a more environmentally sustainable campus and campus community.
