Evacuation procedure during fire strikes
01 Nov 2013
The Fire Brigades Union has announced that it will stage two more strikes: on 1 November (6.30pm - 11pm) and 4 November (6am - 8am).
The first evening strike on 1 November (6.30pm-11pm) falls on the Friday before Bonfire Night. It is also just before Diwali and coincides with half-term, so people need to be really aware of fireworks, bonfires, and their associated hazards in general terms.
The second strike is scheduled for Monday, 4 November (6am-8am).
If for any reason the fire alarm is activated on the University campus, please treat it as an emergency and bear in mind the following advice:
Evacuation procedure during fire strike
- Normal University evacuation procedures will still apply in all buildings;
- Please do not use the lifts during a building evacuation unless they are dedicated evacuation lifts;
- On hearing the alarm or if requested to evacuate, please follow the normal evacuation procedures;
- Emergency assistance can be obtained by dialling Security on 69966.
During the strike you may be kept waiting longer than usual at your assembly point before being allowed to re-enter the building. Please be patient whilst the University's Emergency Teams check buildings to ensure everyone has been evacuated. You can re-enter once the building can be declared safe.
