Book now for Class Matters: understanding inequalities in contemporary Britain

29 Oct 2013

A debate to be held at the Manchester Business School West, Lecture Theatre G6 on Friday, 8 November (5.30-7.30pm)

Class Matter

This event emerges out of the debate surrounding the launch of the results of the Great British Class Survey (GBCS) in April of this year. This in turn was based on the publication of a paper in the influential journal ‘Sociology’, which argued that British society was now characterised by seven social classes rather than the traditional working/middle/upper-class schema.

We live in a society in which the language of class and status is prevalent and where spatial boundaries between regions of affluence and disadvantage are hardening. The purpose of this event is to advance the public debate about class and inequality that the GBCS provoked by bringing a panel of experts into conversation with each other and the wider audience to consider the everyday implications of social class in Britain in 2013 and beyond.

This event takes place as part of the Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) ‘ Festival of Social Science’ and will be followed by a wine reception, generously supported by CRESC: The ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC)
