One-day workshop on black and minority group participation in HE

The Runnymede Trust acts as the secretariat for the APPG on Race and Community. In 2013/14, the APPG is launching an inquiry into higher education and black and minority (BME) groups.

In support of this important enquiry, the Runnymede Academic Forum, in conjunction with the Universities of Manchester, Sheffield, Warwick and LSE, is holding a series of one-day workshops examining BME participation in higher education.

These highly topical seminars will bring together academic research, union members, education experts and university representatives to provide a balanced and rigorous discussion of the current state of higher education for BME academics and students.

The seminars will focus on: BME academics, student recruitment, attainment and the curriculum, and research.

A Discussion of the Role of Black and Minority Ethnic Academics in Higher Education

The first of these seminars, focusing on Black and Minority Academics in HE, will be held at The University of Manchester on Friday, 18 October 2013. Co-sponsored by the University, the event will examine current research on the position of BME academics in UK universities, the experiences of BME academics and emerging initiatives to support BME academic careers and participation.

Following the opening remarks, there will be the opportunity for contributions from the audience and time for networking after the discussion.
