Fire-fighter strike on Wednesday 25 September

Advice on what to do if there is an incident on campus during the proposed Fire Brigades Union strike

The University Fire Safety Department has made arrangements which staff need to know about should an incident take place during the strike, which is proposed for Wednesday 25 September between noon and 4pm.

What happens if there is an incident on campus during the strike?

• Fire alarms will only be attended once a fire has been confirmed by University staff/security
• If an attendance is made, it’s likely to made by a newly trained Emergency Fire Crews accompanied by a fully trained regular fire-fighter (some fire-fighters will be not be on strike and will still be working as normal)
• Attendances are likely to be stretched, with longer attendance times

For the duration of the strike staff should be aware of the following:

• There will be no change in University fire routines
• Evacuation procedures will still be in place and every incident will have a University Security Officer attendance
• The control and management of risks within our buildings will be highly important throughout this period. Extra vigilance will be required
• Staff should make students fully aware of all of the University’s Fire Safety procedures
