Urgent patch for Microsoft Internet Explorer

Microsoft has released an emergency patch for a vulnerability in Internet Explorer and it is important that all University computers and laptops have this applied.

If you are on a managed desktop this patch will be automatically applied to your machine this weekend via the overnight procedure, as detailed in the StaffNet article, Automatic computer updates – working the night shift.

Please note that it is important that your desktop computer or laptop (connected to the University network) is logged off but left switched on, for this to take place.

If you are on an unmanaged machine you will need to download the patch. Once this has been downloaded and the computer re-booted, you will need to run an extra piece of software. Further details on this are available from the Microsoft Technet article.

How do I know if I have a managed or unmanaged computer?

Most computers are managed centrally by IT Services, these can be identified as follows:

• Windows 7 managed computers will have a ‘Help and Information’ icon on the desktop
• Windows XP managed computers will have the words ‘Staff Desktop’ displayed across the desktop area

Computers that are not managed by IT Services will not have the above features.

Note: If you have a University laptop, it is good practice to bring this in and plug it into the University network regularly, to ensure it is able to download and install updates.
