Was there more to Lewis Carroll than 'Alice in Wonderland'?
17 Sep 2013
This year’s Ollerenshaw Lecture is being delivered by Professor Robin Wilson who will be talking about Charles Dodgson - better known as Lewis Carroll.
Perhaps you didn't know that Lewis Carroll's main employment was as a Mathematics Lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford. Professor Wilson, who is Emeritus Professor at The Open University, will be giving the lecture called: 'Lewis Carroll in Numberland'.
The Ollerenshaw Lecture is hosted by the University's School of Mathematics, and named in honour and recognition of Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw.
Any member of University staff can attend and if you'd like to go along, email sebastian.rees@manchester.ac.uk noting whether you have any dietary or other requirements.
Born in Manchester, Dame Kathleen took her degree at Oxford University and has since combined mathematics research with politics, in which sphere she has been Mayor of Manchester and an advisor on education to Margaret Thatcher's government.
She is probably best known in mathematics for her work on magic squares, but also has a formidable reputation as an astronomer. Dame Kathleen, who holds honorary degrees from both the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST, has been a long-standing friend and supporter of mathematics at Manchester.
The 2013 lecture will take place on 8 October in G107 of the Alan Turing Building starting at 5pm and ending at 7.30pm.
