The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Centre is running free events in October for Black History Month
In the Land of the Free
A film screening on 26th September 2013 at 5.30pm in the Renold Building.
In the Land of the Free is a documentary feature that examines the story of Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox and Robert King. They are known as the Angola 3 and have spent almost a century between them in solitary confinement in Angola, the Louisiana State Penitentiary. The film will be introduced by Professor Lou Kushnick.
World War II : Colonies and Colonials
Merika Sherwood - A book launch and author talk on 3rd October 2013 at 6.30pm at the Martin Harris Centre.
Marika Sherwood is a Hungarian-born historian, researcher, educator and author. She has written a substantial number of books on racism, colonialism and black history. She will be talking about her latest book, 'World War II : Colonies and Colonials' which will be available for purchase and signing on the night.
Black Star : Britain/Asian Youth Movements
A book launch on 10th October 2013 at 6pm in the Martin Harris Centre.
Anandi Ramamurthy is Senior Lecturer in Film and Media at the University of Central Lancashire. She has written extensively on race and representation, commodity culture, social movement and people's histories. She will be talking about her latest book, 'Black Star' which documents the vibrant Asian Youth Movements in 1970's and 80's Britain who struggled against the racism of the street and the state.
