University initiatives shortlisted for Times Higher Education Awards 2013

Manchester features in three categories of these awards which celebrate excellence in the HE sector

The Works, a training and advice centre set up by the University with sites in Moss Side, Ardwick and West Gorton, has been shortlisted for this year's Times Higher Education Awards under the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community category. The Works is an employer led one-stop-shop supporting local people to find jobs, develop skills and access training courses and financial advice. Director of HR Karen Heaton and Assistant Director Steve Grant worked together to submit a case study earlier this summer.

The Mimas-led Team SCARLET project has been shortlisted for Outstanding ICT Initiative of the Year. The SCARLET project (Special Collections using Augmented Reality to Enhance Learning and Teaching) - a collaboration between Mimas, The John Rylands Library, learning technologists and the academic community at the University of Manchester - supports the University’s strategic plan to provide an “outstanding learning and student experience.” Making innovative use of mobile technology to bring special collections into the age of the app, the project allows students a more immersive learning experience with rare, fragile objects.

A joint programme called Manchester Higher undertaken by the University with MMU has been shortlisted for Widening Participation and Outreach Initiative of the Year. The programme provides learners across Greater Manchester with free high-quality higher education awareness-raising activities. MMU submitted this entry on behalf of both universities, as the rules allow only one institution per entry.
