Consultation meetings on draft promotions criteria for teaching and learning

12 Sep 2013

Booking is open for sessions in September and October at which academic staff are invited to express their views on the draft document

Last year, a survey was issued to all academic staff asking for a response to a small number of questions around the issue of parity of esteem between teaching and research. The responses showed that the vast majority of colleagues felt that there should be parity, but that the University had some way to go to achieve this. One factor that clearly influenced colleagues’ views was the perception that teaching was not taken seriously enough in promotions. At the same time, those involved in promotions committees argued that teaching is considered seriously in promotions, but that there may sometimes be difficulties around what can be provided as evidence of achievement in the area of teaching and learning.

In response to the outcome of the survey, a group with a brief to consider all issues relating to parity of esteem between research and teaching worked on identifying aspects of teaching, learning and student interaction more broadly that could play a role in promotions. It has also tried to define what evidence could be used to support achievement with respect to each of the criteria. The intention would be that an agreed set of factors and evidence would also improve transparency. The resulting draft document is at:

We are keen to get the views of as many colleagues as possible on the proposed criteria and evidence, as well as suggestions for other criteria, whether some criteria should be obligatory etc. For this purpose, we are planning four open meetings to which all academic staff are invited. The dates for these sessions are:

  • Tuesday, 24 September (12.30-2pm) in Roscoe 1.008
  • Wednesday, 25 September (3.30-5pm) in Roscoe 4.3
  • Tuesday, 1 October (3.30-5pm) in Roscoe 3.3
  • Wednesday, 2 October (12.30-2pm) in Roscoe 3.3

We would very much appreciate it if you could take the time to attend one of the sessions.
