NSS results show continuing improvement in student satisfaction

The preliminary results of the National Student Survey (NSS) for 2013 have been published.

These results show that our University has increased its overall level of student satisfaction by two percent to 85%. The six percentage points increase over the last two years demonstrates our sustained success in enhancing student satisfaction.

The NSS surveys final year undergraduates to assess their satisfaction with their university experience. Our performance in the NSS is important because it affects our position in a range of university league tables.

School averages are not yet known, but there have been some tremendous achievements in subject areas. 23 subjects (Jacs level 3) achieved 90% or more overall satisfaction (16 subjects in 2012) and there were tremendous increases in some subject areas with rises over ten percentage points for social work, genetics, aerospace engineering, cinematics and photography, sociology, drama, medicine, mechanical engineering and ‘others’ in European languages.

Satisfaction with the Students’ Union has increased by four percent to 71%.

The President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, said: "We now need to build on these achievements to reach our goal of achieving 90% in NSS and be in the top quartile of Russell Group universities. We are continuing to invest in the student experience, following the opening of the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, which has been hailed as a great success, and we are currently in the design phase of a new teaching facility as part of the Campus Masterplan."
