Go back to the 80s with the University’s prizewinning parade pack
The President and Vice Chancellor officially launched our Manchester Pride recruitment campaign when she joined senior managers in a University Challenge line-up.
Professor Nancy Rothwell, Deputy President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Rod Coombs, Registrar and Secretary Will Spinks and Director of Human Resources Karen Heaton joined in the spirit of the University’s float theme for this year – Acceptable in the 80s.
It celebrates the University’s great success in the show, which featured in a famed episode of 80s cult comedy The Young Ones.
Pride events have been taking place in Manchester for over 22 years and the current Manchester Pride organisation is in its tenth year of organising the festival. Their main goal is to raise money for a variety of LGBT organisations and groups within Greater Manchester.
This year’s parade will take place on Saturday 24 August.
Last year, the University entered the parade for the first time – and won the award for best public sector entry with our tribute to Alan Turing.
Equality and Diversity Advisor and organiser Paul Marks-Jones says: “This year’s entry will be spiked with 80s nostalgia in every direction you can imagine, plus bang up to date with our own recent success on the gameshow. Matching classic 80s retro against a proper local Mancunian pride and glory? It's got to be a winner!”
Karen Heaton, Director of HR and LGBT Champion, added: "This is a great opportunity for all staff and students to be involved in an important event for the University and the city of Manchester. Being a part of our walking entry demonstrates inclusivity and support for LGBT colleagues, students and future recruits."
Paul added: “We had a wonderful time last year – we had a lot of fun and won the award too – so come and join us this year. You won’t regret it.”
