Computer animation day was huge success

Almost 400 schoolchildren, teachers and parents visited the Martin Harris Centre last Friday (July 12) for Animation13 – the sixth Annual UK Schools Computer Animation Competition Awards and Inspirational Computer Science Day.

Forty-one students from 24 schools collected 50 prizes for their fantastic one-minute computer animations. You can see all the winning movies at http://animation13.cs.manchester.ac.uk.

The morning Oscars-style awards show was followed by an afternoon of hands-on computer science activities and an amazing keynote talk by Gavin Brown on ‘Making Computers think’.

Project leader Toby Howard said: "This was our biggest ever year, with more entries than ever before - almost 700 schools registered for the competition, and 150 schools sent more than 1,000 entries from 1,500 students. We watched every single one!

"We want to enthuse kids about computer science, and to get them to use their computers creatively."

The UK Schools Computer Animation Competition is run annually by the School of Computer Science, and is supported by Electronic Arts, Autodesk and Microsoft Research, in collaboration with Computing at School and cs4fn.

Animation14 launches this September.
