School of Mathematics brings home the corned beef!

Our generous staff are contributing to a local food bank, run by their colleague Lenox Green – and more donations are very welcome.

Lenox, a Postgraduate office administrator in the School of Mathematics, runs the food bank at The Rainbow Christian Centre in Hulme, which he and wife Heather founded ten years ago.

The Centre runs projects which include a gym for adults, youth groups, social events, prison visiting, court appearances and advice on house, benefits, education and debts, all with the aim of helping to prevent addiction and the associated behaviour which leads to it.

Each Friday, the food bank helps local families who are struggling to made ends meet during harsh financial times. Lenox, who has won the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award and more recently the 2013 Manchester Champion Award, is hoping to be able to increase his current stock of food.

He explains: “I sent out an email to the staff at our School requesting support for the Rainbow Christian Centre food bank, which has become a vital lifeline for some people in our local community.

“Each Friday evening men and women, young unemployed, parents with school-aged children and young mothers make their way to Rainbow to collect a weekly food supply that has become a vital part of their welfare.”

Staff at the School of Mathematics responded to Lenox’s plea with pledges of support, packets of biscuits and tins of corned beef! Lenox was delighted.

“On behalf of Rainbow, my wife Heather and our local community, I would once again like to acknowledge the generosity and kindness that the staff and management here in the School of Mathematics has shown,” he says.

“If you knew the people and could see their faces each Friday evening around 6pm when they arrive at Rainbow for food, I am sure that you would be touched by their gratitude.”
