Getting the Greater Manchester Food Revolution moving!

15 Jul 2013

Help Manchester Veg People to raise £16,000 by 19 July and get more local veg onto plates across Manchester.

Martin Smith, Executive Head Chef, and Stu Jones, Manchester Veg People grower

Manchester Veg People is a co-operative of local organic growers and buyers, growing veg sustainably, distributing it and serving it up in Greater Manchester pubs, restaurants and canteens as well as at our very own FoodOnCampus, FoodInResidence, Taste Manchester and the Chancellors Collection.

Born from a concern about the negative impact of the food industry on both the environment and small scale farmers, the University became a founder member of the co-operative in 2011. Our Executive Head Chef, Martin Smith, and Alexander Clark, Sustainabilty Officer in the Directorate for the Student Experience, met with local growers to discuss what they could produce that the University would buy. The MVP was then established which allows the growers themselves to coordinate local supply and demand.

In June this year, the MVP launched their six-week CrowdFunding campaign (due to end on 19 July) to raise funds for a van, cold store and packing equipment in order to enable them to get more local veg from the fields onto the plates throughout Manchester and therefore, help support local growers. To date, they have raised over half of their £16,000 target.

You can support this endeavour by donating anything from £5 to £500 in return for a selection of unusual rewards, ranging from naming a chicken to being a farmer for a day.
