Take an Activist Interest!

03 Jul 2013

Anyone is welcome to take part in the latest Activist Performance Blogging Event on 10 July, in the Northern Quarter.

The Activist Performance Blog is a collaborative research project based here at the University, feeding into a special issue of the journal Contemporary Theatre Review.

Artists and performance groups have often played an active role in protest events, drawing on bodies, text, image and movement as imaginative projections against the perceived order of things.  This event offers the idea of ‘gesture’ as an open-ended stimulus for contributors, with the aim of documenting activist events past and present.

Between 2–5 pm there will be a collective blogging workshop with artists, activists and researchers. Bring ideas for protest gestures to research and also, if you have one, a laptop or tablet with wireless capability, as well as any other materials that might stimulate your own or other people’s blogging. Selected extracts from the blog will be published as a ‘Gestural Notes’ document within the special issue. Tea and coffee will be provided!

Then, between 6-8 pm a public seminar will be held with short presentations on protest gestures from artists, activists and researchers.
